I highly recommend listening to the audio recording of The Greatest Love Story Ever Told by Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally.  You may not get to see photos of the jigsaw puzzles they're proud of, but you do get to hear her make him giggle a lot.  They are adorable and real and hilarious.

Earlier this year I found an article recommending audiobooks for different genres, taking the recording artists into consideration, and I’ve been slowly working through it. There are some books that I want to read in my own voice, but there are other books I would never have read had there not been a recorded audiobook. One such book was Bruce Springsteen’s autobiography, Born to Run.

I never listened to his music growing up outside what was played on the radio. I think the only song I really knew was his is Born in the U.S.A. I knew he was from the north, blue collar, and had a band.

The book was better than I was expecting. There’s a period of his life he opens up about towards the end of the book that reminded me of what I went through the summer of 2016. I’ve struggled with anxiety and I’ve struggled with depression, but I’d never gone through something so upside down before. And I’d never heard of anyone else describe it. His instance is different in a few ways, but I really connected with it. Outside of my immediate family and previous roommate watching it happen,  I’ve never spoken to anyone about it before so I never felt I could relate to anyone about it.

Other than that, the book opened me up to his music, to making music, and that deep appreciation for music. I’d found this song over the summer that I liked enough to put on a mix by Soccer Mommy. Lo and behold it’s a cover of Bruce’s song I’m On Fire. Soccer Mommy’s cover is mellow and chill and it feels right for summer nights. Turns out Bruce’s original, although more lively and growly, feels like summer nights in the car with the windows down.

I like them both so much I started a new mix, Little Fires Everywhere. Bruce opens the mix and Soccer Mommy ends it. On loop they sound good after each other too. The mix isn’t finished, but I’m really enjoying it so far.

What did I do with my degree today? Become a resource for book clubs. Well it feels like it. I just recommended the second book in a row for my neighborhood book club, and I'm not even a part of it.

Meanwhile I was the only person present who wanted them to go away so that I could read my own books. It was a long day at work. I just wanted to be home, free, and read.

I was prepared to have those serious conversations this weekend, not for a trip to the hospital. There are two hospitals near Hendersonville, but people always say no one comes out of the one alive. So we made sure to go to the other. She's going to hospice tonight, so we can celebrate that. She broke some bones in her lower back, but it wasn't near her aorta, so she can decline surgery.

I just finished the book Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo in the Emergency Room. It is such a fitting book for this weekend. No tears, no pleas shouted to God.  Just acceptance, compassion, and love.

But what should we do? Where do we go?

And yet, I still feel so selfish. I still want more.

Rotimi.

This song has gotten stuck in my head.  The ta da da da da da da da da and the guitar.

But that's besides the point, because I won! The lottery or a nice trip or a new car would all be nice, but those are not the kind of contests that I enter.  Nope, I am all about the paperback.  Read It Forward has a few cool themed contests, but also quite a few single book contests.  You're all like, okay, but is it any good?  What did you win?

The Martian was good, good enough to make an okay movie out of, but I was not really thrilled to enter an Andy Weir contest.  Until I saw the name of the book, Artemis. The stars they do align.

According to Goodread's sad reading challenge meter I am two books behind.  October has not been an easy month to read through.  I have been using my alternative methods, i.e. books on tape, to keep myself from sliding too far off course.  Reading Artemis doesn't seem like a way to help me keep up my challenge timeline, so it might be a December/January read.  Still pretty exciting!

I have decided to go on a 14 hour in all road trip next weekend to visit a friend and am stocking up now on books on tape from the library to keep me entertained.  The best books on tape are thrillers because they keep your mind sharp as you try to solve the puzzle.  I just finished Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson.  I enjoyed both versions of the movie adapted from the book and the book on tape was slower in parts but more thorough and educational. I have added the book on tape for The Girl Who Played with Fire, also by Stieg Larsson, to my library reserve list to enjoy on my roadtrip along with The Alice Network by Kate Quinn and The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman.  I wish I had known about the trip earlier because Ready Player One by Ernest Cline would have been a perfect roadtrip book.  I highly recommend it.
